Interns Needed 1: New York

Date 28th Jul 2009

The Age of Stupid team seek 5 New York based interns for one month packing out US screenings, promoting Age of Stupid, pulling off the biggest and greenest film premiere and helping to avert runaway climate change.

Where: Our temporary New York Office (Chelsea)
When: 20th August (or thereabouts) until 22nd September.

On September 21st and 22nd 2009, The Age of Stupid Global Premiere will launch the film in over 40 countries and in 400 mainstream cinemas across the US. We are planning the biggest and greenest film event the world has ever seen, with the aim of catapulting climate change right into the centre of the public consciousness  in the last few months leading up to the crucial Copenhagen summit this December, when all our futures will be decided. At the heart of the event will be a solar powered cinema screening in New York. A-list celebrities walking up the green carpet and the panel debate after the film, with live satellite links ups to the Himalayas, an Indonesian rainforest and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, will all be watched live across the US in 440 cinemas. The event will then be rolled out across the world over the following 24 hours. This is going to be a massive event and we need your help to do it.

The Outreach Internships: We have 115,000 seats to fill across America, and we want every cinema screening to be a packed out success that motivates people to engage with climate change. Working on the area that suits your experience, connections and interests, we are looking for a dedicated and effective group of interns to reach out to groups and organisations across the country and get them involved with what promises to be a massive and inspiring event.

The roles are as follows:

- Faith Outreach
You will need a good understanding of the best ways to reach different faith groups across America. You will already be involved with some of these groups and networks, and be happy to work with a variety of faith groups.

- Students & Campus Groups Outreach
You'll be a student or recent graduate who knows who to contact to get groups from every university and college to come to the event.

 - Film Community Outreach
If you're in touch with Indie-filmmakers and film watching groups, help us get them to the premiere of a low-budget, crowd-funded independent documentary that is making waves across the world in innovative new ways.

- Web Outreach
Are you a blogging, alternative media, social network obsessive? We need the event to be heard about across as many platforms as possible.

We also have another internship available:
- Event Assistant & Runner
Working closely with the event co-ordinator you will assist with anything and everything necessary to make the solar powered, celeb filled New York event a huge success. You'll need a really good knowledge of New York City; where to find stuff, how to get there, and how to solve a late night crisis. You'll need to be happy to do admin and runners tasks, but you'll be an integral part of the event. This role would be great work experience for anyone wanting to work in events or interested in alternative film promotion.

Working with us:  Working directly with the event producer and event co-ordinator, you'll be working as part of a very small but very ambitious and effective team. We'll support you at every step, but you'll need to be able to use your own initiative and prior knowledge of the groups you are trying to reach to plan and implement your own work. As well as your dedicated role, you'll also get involved with a million and one different things and we hope that you'll join us for the US and Global Premiere on September 21st and 22nd when our hard work will come together.

To be successful you will be: Well organised, motivated, friendly, a good team player, have a passion for the avoidance of dangerous climate change, a good phone manner, be full of energy, and willing to work very hard for this one month.  For the outreach positions you'll need a good knowledge and understanding of the groups and networks you want to reach. Ideally (but not at all essential) you would have experience of event planning and management and a good knowledge of climate change.

The Importance: It is less than five months until the world's leaders decide our collective futures at the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December, where they will finalise the successor to the Kyoto Treaty. We have timed the Global Premiere to coincide with the first day of the UN General Assembly, when many world leaders will gather in New York and the world's media will be starting the build-up to Copenhagen. By bringing the film to a worldwide audience through the live event, we hope to inspire people everywhere to demand from our politicians that the new deal is not what is deemed politically possible, but is as strong as the science of the planet demands. You'll be playing a key role in the most ambitious campaigning film release ever attempted.

The Money: There isn't any. We will of course reimburse you for agreed lunch and travel expenses.
The Hours: We'll need you full time 5 days a week but we can be flexible. Be prepared to work long hours when things are busy (they often are).

How to Apply: Please send your CV to intern@ageofstupid.net (subject line: "NEW YORK INTERNSHIP APPLICATION: YOUR NAME") along with an answer to the following question in 300 words or less: 'I want the internship because?'. Please make it clear which internship you are applying for.
The Closing Date: Thursday 13th August.

NOTE: Although the deadline has passed and we're getting together a great team, there are still some roles available, and there will be other ways you can help right up until the event. So  please get in touch (through intern@ageofstupid.net) if you have time and energy to spare.
