13 June 2003 - United Kingdom - Drowned Out - Rating: Not Rated

Masterfully crafted

Publication: One World Media Awards Jury

(This from the OneWorld Media Awards in London, where Drowned Out was on the final shortlist of 3 for Best International Documentary. "Bus 174" won though.)

Introduction by presenter:
"Made over three years by a truly independent British director, with no commission, no access to electricity to charge camera batteries and not a word of Hindi. The latter being a slight disadvantage since Drowned Out is a film about the plight of villagers whose land is threatened by the notorious Narmada Dam project"

Jury's statement:
"Drowned Out, by Franny Armstrong, was seen by the panel as a powerful and masterfully crafted study of a stand-off between the powerless and the powerful."

Quotes:
"Call me biased, but I learnt more from this film (and laughed much more) than I did in Super Size Me."
